AREA 51 UPDATE - 8/19/00:
Michael L. Hefflin
1967 - 2000
Tuesday, August 15th, Michael Hefflin was killed in a motorcycle accident. Even though the circle of common friends have not seen or spoken to one another in several years, the news spread quickly. Fate struck again, causing us to re-connect the bonds we once had in order share grievance for the loss of a beloved friend. In light of this news, a new perspective was born, one in which made reasons for separation quite insignificant in retrospect.
In times like these, one wonders why we feel so immortal up until the point of knowing you've lost someone close to your heart. Michael's friends created bonds long ago and experienced love, laughter, anger and forgiveness - elements that create incredibly strong bonds. Long term friendship seems endless. For one reason or another, you may not speak to one another for long periods of time, but you always feel like they will always be there. Immortal.
The shock is an everlasting echo. The sound of a heart breaking is even more devastating to hear. The words are as painful to say as they are to hear. Faith helps you cope with death. Time heals the heart. A double edged sword: You need time to heal. You are on borrowed time.
Petty differences lack weight in these moments. Take what time you have and put it to good use. Live every day as if it were your last. Don't let life "happen" to you. Live it. Each moment is a gift. Savor it. Don't ever take it for granted. Embrace life, embrace each other.
Michael has been a friend of ours for over 15 years. He was the officiant at our wedding and a brother to both of us. Michael is loved beyond words and beyond this realm. His warm, loving and charming character will be greatly missed... until we are all reunited again on the other side. May he live on in our hearts and minds.
